Staying Healthy

I’ve gotten some great advice recently about how to stay healthy, and I wanted to pass it along!   Check out my friend Christi’s newsletter about avoiding getting sick this winter.   Christi is an awesome holistic health counselor and I especially like her advice to: not eat sugar, sleep a lot and bulk up on Vitamin D and C!   She has a lot more tips in her newsletter.

My friend Shea also recently wrote an article for Mindful Mama.  She writes about similar ways to stay healthy and calls them the 3  S’s: enough sleep, lower stress, and less sugar.   Both of these articles raise the important point of not listening to all the fear out there this winter, especially if you’re a parent.

Of course, I am always a fan of encouraging yoga!  If you *are* stressed about this winter season, practice some deep, slow breathing and hold some of your favorite stretches for a while.   10 minutes of yogic stretching a day can make a world of difference, and probably will help you implement the above advice.  Try these 4 restorative postures from the CorePowerYoga blog.

Finally, the Marino Center sent me a great chart that highlights the difference between cold and flu symptoms.

FEVER –   Cold: Uncommon   Flu: Common (100 degrees or higher) in 80% of flu cases

COUGH – Cold: Hacking (with mucous) is common    Flu: Dry cough is common

ACHES – Cold: Mildly aches are common   Flu: Severe aches and pains are common

STUFFY NOSE – Cold: Common and resolves within a week  Flu: Uncommon

CHILLS – Cold: Uncommon   Flu: 60% of people with flu experience chills

TIREDNESS Cold: Mild tiredness  Flu: Moderate to severe fatigue

SNEEZING – Cold: Common  Flu: Uncommon

HEADACHECold: Uncommon Flu: Common

SORE THROAT – Cold: Common   Flu: Common

CHEST DISCOMFORT – Cold: Mild to moderate   Flu: Often severe

ONSET OF SYMPTOMS – Cold: Symptoms occur a few days after exposure    Flu: Rapid onset within 3-6 hours

Thursday Thankfulness – One Week Until…

I’ve been thinking about Thankfulness, even if I haven’t been writing about it.  There’s been so much to be thankful for over the last several months!  Here’s some highlights, one for every day between now and Thanksgiving (only one week until Tofurky Day!!).

1)      We were featured in the Top 50 Yoga Blogs!!  Check it out, and find some other blogs worth reading!

2)      The weather – I’m still able to exercise outside!  Last night, several of us were waiting for the studio to open and someone commented that it was getting a little chilly, but still we were all so grateful that we could be outside without gloves and hats and be comfortable!

3)      Vitamin D!  In my recent checkup, I was on the borderline of being deficient.  I did some research, and did you know that taking adequate amounts of Vitamin D might help you avoid or get over the flu more quickly?  Talk to your doctor about how much Vitamin D3 you should take to prevent or treat the flu.

4)      Facebook.   We can waste time on Facebook, I know, but it’s a great place for me to learn what friends and family are up to.   Plus, they post awesome things.   Just today, a yoga student of mine posted this from the Positivity Blog: 5 Things You Can Do Today to Change your Life.

5)      Weddings – we went to 7 in the last 6 months!  It was really fun (and only a little tiring).  I laughed, danced and cried a lot!  It’s been great to spend quality time with all my friends and family.   In fact, we had such a good time, we decided to get married ourselves 🙂

6)      Backbends!   Loving wheel pose!   If you’re struggling with this pose, try using blocks, pictured below.

7)      Finally, I want to give thanks to you, my dear yogis!!  Thank you for practicing, thank you for attending class and taking my online programs, and thank you for reading!

I got up this morning and the first thing I thought was, “I love what I’m doing in the world.”

Yay,

Online World of Yoga

Well, I’m back.  Whew!   I had quite a month with a spectacularly fun Yoga Odyssey all of October.   Unfortunately, I also had some crazy stuff go on, including lots of travelling and my laptop getting stolen while travelling (and my Ipod – oh my lord do I miss my music!).

I’m back in the driver’s seat now, and really looking forward to the next several months, writing and getting ready for my next Yoga Odyssey (in January!).

One of the things about this last Odyssey is that I’ve been enjoying more and more online yoga resources.  I’m hoping to compile more of a list on this blog of my favorite yoga blogs.  I’d love to hear what you all like.

As I’m coming back into writing on the blog, I immediately went to some of my favorite blogs to get into the spirit of writing again.  And I looked to Yogajournal.com – they’ve got so much online.   I’m wondering why I keep up my print subscription!  It all ends up online eventually.

Here’s a quick video from a favorite teacher of mine – David Swenson.   He talks about overcoming resistance to practicing.   This is such a theme of our month-long Odyssey that it resonated with me.  I wanted to share it!

When I’m vacillating on whether or not to practice (or exercise), I try to remind myself that I’m always happy I did it.   You never regret a practice, which Swenson mentions as well.

Get on the mat, and enjoy!
